The Great Thanksgiving Turkey Trouble
by Janie Beth
Chapter 3 – Wild Turkey Chase
Outside, the chilly air smelled like leaves and pie. Ellie and Max tiptoed around the yard.
“Shhh,” Ellie whispered. “Turkeys are sneaky.”
They peeked behind the bushes. Rustle, rustle! Something moved.
“Gotcha!” Max yelled, jumping forward—
—but it was Muffin, the neighbor’s cat, looking very confused.
“Sorry, Muffin,” Ellie said. “False alarm.”
Next, they checked the shed.
Inside, they found a soccer ball, a rake, and some very suspicious piles of leaves.
“Could a turkey hide in there?” Max whispered.
“Maybe,” said Ellie, poking the leaves with a stick.
A squirrel shot out! Both kids screamed—and then laughed until they fell over.
“We need a trap,” Ellie said when she could breathe again.
They used a laundry basket, a stick, and some string.
Max sprinkled crackers underneath. “Turkeys love snacks.”
Then they waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.
Finally Max sighed. “Maybe the turkey’s having Thanksgiving at someone else’s house.”
Chapter 4 – The Big Discovery
Just then, Dad’s voice called from inside. “Found it!”
Ellie and Max dashed in.
Dad held up the turkey—still wrapped and cold.
“I put it in the cooler in the laundry room last night,” he said. “Grandma needed the fridge for her pies.”
Ellie groaned. “So it never escaped?”
“Nope,” said Dad with a smile. “But I heard you two had quite the adventure.”
Mom laughed. “Our little detectives saved the day… sort of.”
Max puffed out his chest. “We almost caught a turkey—and a cat!”
Everyone laughed.
Chapter 5 – A Thanksgiving to Remember
That afternoon, the house filled with the sound of talking, laughter, and clinking plates.
The golden turkey sat proudly in the middle of the table.
Grandma said, “Before we eat, let’s say what we’re thankful for.”
Ellie smiled. “I’m thankful the turkey wasn’t really lost.”
Max added, “And that we caught the cat instead!”
Everyone laughed again.
Mom passed the rolls. Dad carved the turkey. The smell made everyone’s stomach rumble.
Ellie raised her glass of milk. “To the Great Thanksgiving Turkey Trouble!”
Max clinked his cup against hers.
And everyone agreed—it was the best Thanksgiving ever.
