The Great Thanksgiving Turkey Trouble
by Janie Beth
Chapter 1 – Turkey Day Morning
The house smelled like cinnamon, pumpkin, and something delicious in the oven.
Mom was mashing potatoes. Dad was checking his list twice.
“Grandma and Grandpa will be here soon!” Mom said.
Ellie set the table carefully, one shiny plate at a time.
Max stood on a stool beside her, “helping” by sneaking tastes of whipped cream.
“Don’t forget the turkey,” Mom told Dad. “It’s in the garage fridge.”
Dad nodded and went to get it. A minute later, he called, “Uh… honey? The turkey’s not here!”
Mom blinked. “What do you mean, not there?”
“It’s gone!” said Dad.
Gone? The biggest, most important part of Thanksgiving dinner—missing!
Ellie gasped. Max’s eyes grew wide.
This was serious.
Chapter 2 – The Turkey Detectives
Ellie grabbed her detective notebook. “Don’t worry, Mom. We’ll solve this case.”
Max raced off and came back wearing his superhero cape. “I’m ready for action!”
The two detectives got to work. Ellie drew a clue map. Max shined his flashlight everywhere, even under the couch.
“Feathers!” Max shouted, holding up a few from the craft table.
“Hmm,” Ellie said. “Possible evidence.”
Then they spotted a white trail of flour across the floor and some muddy paw prints near the door.
Max gasped. “The turkey escaped! Maybe it’s outside!”
Ellie grinned. “Then we’d better catch it before dinner time.”
